Have you watched the movie, "Rekes Liebe" by Yasmina Reza? If not, then I'm just taking a wild guess that you haven't. If so, then I'm assuming that you know the plot of this romantic story between two office workers who fall in love with one another at their workplace. What I want to talk about is how it's translated into English. The film was originally written in German and French, but for its release in 2008, there were English subtitles added to it for American audiences. I never watched it completely, but I did watch all of the subtitles. I love watching movie subtitles because I like learning new words and phrases, and also because it's fun to see how other languages are translated into English. For example, there is a scene in which one of the main characters comes back from vacationing in India. Another character asks him if he saw "anything interesting." When you watch it in German, he says something like "something fantastically crazy". It's one of my favorite lines in the film because "something fantastically crazy" is such an adorable way to describe India to someone who hasn't been there. I was very happy with how this movie was translated into English for American audiences. I was happy, of course, because I am an English major and I love to read translated literature. I also think that it's important for people who are fluent in two languages to see how the other language is translated into their own language. Sometimes, the translation can be very literal, which can sound strange or awkward if you're not used to reading it. A good translator needs to take into account all of the nuances of the source text and make it comprehensible for the audience. Yasmina Reza did a great job on this film. The first thing that struck me about this film is how beautiful the cinematography was. The film takes place in Rezek's apartment, where she works as a writer all day and then returns to her apartment in the evening. In the opening scene, we see that she is living alone. She lives alone with her plants and her pets. She cooks for herself and cleans up after herself, but she doesn't really have any friends or a love life. It's made obvious to us that this is a lonely life because of the music in the background. The music is very depressing, with minor chords and slow tempo. Another thing I noticed is how very human the characters were. The main characters in this movie are Rezek (played by Julie Delpy) and her boss, Olympe (played by Mathieu Amalric). They have a very awkward relationship with one another for a couple of reasons. For one thing, they've never been properly introduced to one another by any mutual friends. The reason for this is because Rezek doesn't have any friends. She has only a few co-workers at work and there's something going on between her and Olympe, but it's never really explained what that might be.
